Revenue & margin
Gross margin (after product cost and fees)
Visitors that become orders
Inventory (optional — to calculate minimum CTR)
Averages: Meta R$ 15-40, Google Display R$ 8-20
Averages: Meta 0.9-1.5%, Google Search 3-6%
Why use 3 scenarios
- Conservative (50%): leaves room for measurement errors and excluded operational costs.
- Neutral (75%): target for a healthy operation, the bid goal.
- Aggressive (90%): only justified with high LTV or strong repeat purchases (covers day-1 loss).
Reading caveats
- • "Maximum" CPA assumes each sale only recovers the first-order margin. If you have strong repeat purchases, you can go higher.
- • The LP conversion rate must be real, not a market average. Use your own, from the quarter.
- • Compare CPM/CTR with effective ROAS after 1-2 weeks; the model is a projection, not a guarantee.
How it works
How to calculate ad break-even
Ad break-even is the line that separates profit from loss in a campaign. The maximum CPA (cost per acquisition that still pays off) equals your contribution margin per order, the profit left on each sale before media spend. From it you derive the maximum CPC (max CPA × conversion rate) and the minimum CTR, which ties clicks to impressions so you don't overpay per click.
Example: a R$ 200 order with a 40% margin leaves R$ 80 of contribution margin per order; that's your maximum CPA. If the landing page converts 2% of clicks, the maximum CPC is R$ 80 × 0.02 = R$ 1.60. Paying more than that per click on Meta Ads, Google Ads or TikTok Ads melts the margin before the sale even lands.
The implied break-even ROAS is order value ÷ maximum CPA: R$ 200 ÷ R$ 80 = 2.5, and below that you lose money. The conservative, neutral and aggressive scenarios show this same CPA at different conversion rates; aim to clear break-even in all three before scaling the budget.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- What is break-even in ad campaigns?
- Break-even is the point where the revenue your campaign generates exactly covers ad spend plus product costs: no profit, no loss. From it you derive the maximum CPA, maximum CPC and minimum CTR that still make the campaign viable.
- How do I calculate the break-even (maximum) CPA for a campaign?
- Your maximum CPA is how much you can pay per sale without losing money: max CPA = average order value × contribution margin (%). The calculator then derives the maximum CPC and minimum CTR you need on Meta Ads, Google Ads or TikTok Ads.
- What's the difference between break-even ROAS and maximum CPA?
- Break-even ROAS is the minimum return on ad spend (ROAS = 1 ÷ margin), while maximum CPA is the cap on cost per sale in dollars. The tool shows both, with the implied ROAS for each scenario.
- What are the conservative, neutral and aggressive scenarios for?
- They show three target ranges side by side: conservative keeps a margin cushion, neutral sits at exact break-even, and aggressive accepts paying more per sale to win volume. Each one lists max CPA, max CPC, minimum CTR and implied ROAS.
- Is the ads break-even calculator free?
- Yes, it's 100% free and runs right in your browser with no signup. Enter your average order value, margin and conversion rate and instantly get your break-even maximum CPA, maximum CPC and minimum CTR.
